Problem

Two compound microscopes A and B have the following parameters: Microscope A: objective focal length 0.60 cm0.60\,\text{cm}, eyepiece focal length 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm}, tube length 18 cm18\,\text{cm}. Microscope B: objective focal length 0.40 cm0.40\,\text{cm}, eyepiece focal length 5.0 cm5.0\,\text{cm}, tube length also 18 cm18\,\text{cm}. The final images are formed at infinity. (i) Calculate the overall magnifying power of each microscope. (ii) The tube length of microscope B is now increased to 20 cm20\,\text{cm} while keeping its lenses unchanged. Compute the percentage increase in its magnifying power. (iii) Based on your results, discuss which microscope design (short-focus objective with longer tube versus relatively longer-focus objective) is more advantageous when very high magnification is required, mentioning two practical considerations.
