Problem

A mini hydroelectric plant supplies a continuous power output of 2.5 MW to a nearby industrial estate. (i) Convert 2.5 MW2.5\,\text{MW} to watts and then to joules per second. (ii) The estate plans to operate simultaneously: 400 machines each of 3.2 kW3.2\,\text{kW}, 120 space heaters each of 1.5 kW1.5\,\text{kW} and one emergency pump of 250 W250\,\text{W}. Calculate the total power demand in megawatts. (iii) Decide whether the plant can meet this demand. If it cannot, determine the shortfall in kilowatts; if it can, state the surplus in kilowatts.
