Problem

During routine maintenance, an electric winch raises a 120 kg120\,\text{kg} service platform at constant speed. The winch consumes 2.0×103 J2.0 \times 10^{3}\,\text{J} of electrical energy to bring the platform from its initial position to its final position. (1) Part 1: (a) Assuming all of the electrical energy is converted into gravitational potential energy of the platform–Earth system, determine the vertical distance the platform is raised. Include appropriate units and significant figures. (2) Part 2: (b) The operator now doubles the load by placing an additional 120 kg120\,\text{kg} of equipment on the platform and raises it through the same vertical distance found in part (a). Calculate the additional gravitational potential energy gained by the system in this second lift. (3) Part 3: (c) Discuss qualitatively how the energy used by the winch would compare to the answer in part (b) if the platform were instead raised twice as high with the original 120 kg120\,\text{kg} load. Support your reasoning with relevant physical principles.
