Problem

Suppose 1.0 g1.0\,\text{g} of water vaporizes isobarically at atmospheric pressure, 1.01×105 Pa1.01\times10^5\,\text{Pa}. Its volume in the liquid state is Vi=Vliquid=1.0 cm3V_i=V_{\text{liquid}}=1.0\,\text{cm}^3 and its volume in the vapour state is Vf=Vvapour=1671 cm3V_f=V_{\text{vapour}}=1671\,\text{cm}^3. Find the work done in the expansion and the change in internal energy of the system. Ignore mixing of the steam and surrounding air. Take the latent heat of vaporization as Lv=2.26×106 J kg−1L_v=2.26\times10^6\,\text{J kg}^{-1}.
