Problem

Non-zero vectors p⃗\vec p and q⃗\vec q satisfy ∣p⃗∣=∣q⃗∣=5|\vec p| = |\vec q| = 5 and p⃗⋅q⃗=0\vec p \cdot \vec q = 0. (i) Prove that ∣(p⃗+q⃗)×(p⃗−q⃗)∣=50\bigl|(\vec p + \vec q) \times (\vec p - \vec q)\bigr| = 50. (ii) Hence find the area of the parallelogram whose adjacent sides are p⃗+q⃗\vec p + \vec q and p⃗−q⃗\vec p - \vec q. (iii) Compare the area obtained in part (ii) with the sum of the areas of the squares having sides p⃗\vec p and q⃗\vec q, and interpret the result geometrically.
