Problem

A solid block of steel sinks when dropped into water, whereas a huge ocean liner made of the same metal is able to float safely. Answer the following points related to this observation. (i) State Archimedes’ principle. (ii) Using the idea of density and displaced water, explain why a compact block of steel sinks but a hollow-shaped steel ship floats, even though both are made of the same material. (iii) A ship has a marked load line (Plimsoll line). Explain with reason what will happen if cargo is added so that the hull is pressed 0.5 m below this line while still in sea water.
