Problem

A 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} block of copper is taken from 400 K400\,\text{K} and placed in thermal contact with a very large heat reservoir at 300 K300\,\text{K}. The specific heat capacity of copper may be taken as c=400 J kg−1K−1c = 400\,\text{J\,kg}^{-1}\text{K}^{-1} and is assumed to be constant over the temperature range involved. (a) Calculate the change in entropy of the copper block as it cools to 300 K300\,\text{K}. (b) Determine the change in entropy of the reservoir. (c) Hence find the total change in entropy of the universe and state whether the cooling of the block under these conditions is spontaneous, reversible or impossible.
