Problem

In the school laboratory a lamp of resistance 6 Ω6\,\Omega is to be tested using a single 3 V3\,\text{V} cell. A student reports, “I connected an ammeter of 0–3 A range across the lamp and a voltmeter of 0–5 V range in series with the cell.” (i) Identify the two mistakes in the student’s description of the circuit connection. (ii) Redraw the circuit correctly, labelling the ammeter, voltmeter, cell and lamp. (iii) For each mistake, explain how it would affect (a) the brightness of the lamp and (b) the meter readings if the circuit were actually completed that way.
