Problem

Two planets X and Y revolve around the same star in nearly circular orbits. The time periods of revolution are TX=8 yrT_X=8\,\text{yr} and TY=27 yrT_Y=27\,\text{yr} respectively. (i) Using an appropriate relation, find the ratio of their orbital radii rXrY\dfrac{r_X}{r_Y}. Express your answer to two significant figures. (ii) Compute the ratio of their linear orbital speeds vXvY\dfrac{v_X}{v_Y}. Assume the orbits are circular. (iii) Comment on whether each planet sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time and state the implication for their areal velocities.
