Problem

For the real parameter kk, define the function fk:R→Rf_k:\mathbb R \to \mathbb R by fk(x)=x3+3x2+kf_k(x)=x^{3}+3x^{2}+k. (i) Prove that fkf_k is continuous on R\mathbb R. (ii) Evaluate lim⁡x→−∞fk(x)\displaystyle \lim_{x\to-\infty}f_k(x) and lim⁡x→∞fk(x)\displaystyle \lim_{x\to\infty}f_k(x). (iii) Using the results of (i) and (ii), show that fkf_k is surjective for every real value of kk.
