Problem

Three identical bulbs each marked 60 W,  220 V60\,\text{W},\;220\,\text{V} are available for an experiment. The bulbs are first connected in series across a 220 V220\,\text{V} supply and then re-connected in parallel across the same supply. (i) For the series arrangement, calculate the power actually consumed by the combination. (ii) For the parallel arrangement, calculate the power consumed by the combination. (iii) Compare the brightness of a bulb in the series circuit with that of a bulb in the parallel circuit and give two reasons for the difference. (iv) Using your results, explain quantitatively why parallel connection is preferred in household wiring.
