Problem

Consider three objects, each moving in a straight line: • an electron of mass 9.11×10−31 kg9.11\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg} traveling at 3.0×106 m s−13.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, • a neutron of mass 1.67×10−27 kg1.67\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg} traveling at 1.0×103 m s−11.0\times10^{3}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, and • a baseball of mass 0.15 kg0.15\,\text{kg} traveling at 40 m s−140\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (a) Without performing detailed numerical calculations, rank the three objects from largest to smallest wavelength. Clearly state the reasoning you use to establish the ranking. (b) Identify the pair of objects whose wavelengths differ by the greatest factor and explain qualitatively why quantum mechanical effects are significant for one object in the pair but not for the other.
