Problem

For liquid flow through a cylindrical pipe, the motion changes from laminar to turbulent when the speed exceeds a critical value vcv_c. Suppose vcv_c depends only on the liquid’s density ρ\rho, coefficient of viscosity η\eta, and the pipe radius rr. (i) Derive an expression for vcv_c in terms of ρ,η\rho, \eta and rr, retaining an undetermined dimensionless constant. (ii) From your result, write the dimensionless combination of ρ,vc,r\rho, v_c, r and η\eta that characterises the flow through the pipe.
