Problem

Let ff and gg be differentiable functions on [0,a][0,a] and consider the parametric curve CC defined by x(t)=f(t)x(t)=f(t), y(t)=g(t)y(t)=g(t). A new curve CcC_c is obtained by scaling each coordinate by a positive constant cc: xc(t)=cf(t)x_c(t)=cf(t), yc(t)=cg(t)y_c(t)=cg(t). (1) Explain how the arc length of CcC_c on [0,a][0,a] is related to the arc length of CC on the same interval. Provide a clear justification based on properties of derivatives. (2) Suppose instead that only the xx–coordinate is scaled, giving the curve DdD_d defined by xd(t)=d f(t)x_d(t)=d\,f(t) and yd(t)=g(t)y_d(t)=g(t). Derive a general expression that compares the arc length of DdD_d on [0,a][0,a] to that of CC. Express your answer in terms of dd and derivatives of ff and gg. (3) Using your expression from part (b), determine the value(s) of d>0d>0 (if any) for which the arc length of DdD_d on [0,a][0,a] is unchanged from that of CC. Explain your reasoning.
