Problem

Three point charges are fixed on a straight line with equal spacing aa between successive charges. The charges, in order from the origin, are: • q1=qq_1 = q at x=0x = 0 • q2=kqq_2 = kq at x=ax = a • q3=4qq_3 = 4q at x=2ax = 2a (Here q>0q>0 and kk is a real number.) (i) Write an algebraic expression for the net electrostatic force acting on q1q_1 in terms of qq, kk, aa, and the electrostatic constant kek_e. (ii) Determine the value of kk for which the net force on q1q_1 becomes zero. (iii) Using the value of kk obtained in part (ii), calculate the magnitude and direction of the net electrostatic force acting on the charge q3q_3 at x=2ax = 2a.
