Problem
A student wishes to demonstrate the principle of inertia to her classmates using a coin, a small rectangular card, and an open glass tumbler placed upright on the desk.
(i) Describe a step-by-step experimental procedure by which the student can show that the coin drops directly into the tumbler when the card is flicked horizontally.
(ii) Predict separately what will be observed if the card is pulled very rapidly and if it is pulled slowly. State the reason for the difference in observations.
(iii) Explain the physical principle responsible for the coin’s behaviour in part (ii), clearly mentioning the role of friction between the coin and the card.
(iv) Suggest one modification to the set-up or technique that would increase the likelihood of a successful demonstration, and justify your suggestion.
