Problem
A small lamp of mass 12kg is hung by two light strings OA and OB fixed to a ceiling. String OA makes an angle of 40∘ with the ceiling, while string OB makes an angle of 55∘ with the ceiling on the other side. Both strings lie in the same vertical plane.
(i) Draw a free-body diagram of the lamp.
(ii) Choose suitable axes and resolve each force acting on the lamp into components along these axes.
(iii) Using the conditions for equilibrium, calculate the tension in each string OA and OB.
