Problem

(a) Define the term "rectangular component" of a vector lying in a plane. (b) With the aid of a neat labelled sketch, describe how any vector in two-dimensional space can be represented completely by its two mutually perpendicular rectangular components. (c) A vector A\mathbf{A} has components AxA_x along the x-axis and AyA_y along the y-axis. Starting from the right-angled triangle formed by these components, show that the magnitude of the vector is given by A=Ax2+Ay2A=\sqrt{A_x^{2}+A_y^{2}}. (d) If the magnitude of the vector is 13 units13\,\text{units} and its x-component is 5 units5\,\text{units}, calculate: (i) the y-component, and (ii) the angle that the vector makes with the positive x-axis (answer correct to the nearest degree).
