Problem

A student investigates the behaviour of a series RLC circuit having R=20 ΩR=20\,\Omega, L=200 mHL=200\,\text{mH}, and C=5.0 μFC=5.0\,\mu\text{F}. Measurements are to be made at two supply frequencies: f1=50 Hzf_{1}=50\,\text{Hz} and f2=1000 Hzf_{2}=1000\,\text{Hz}. (a) Calculate the inductive reactance and the capacitive reactance at f1=50 Hzf_{1}=50\,\text{Hz}. (b) Repeat the calculations for f2=1000 Hzf_{2}=1000\,\text{Hz}. (c) Using your results, determine the impedance of the circuit at each frequency. (d) On the basis of your numerical answers, state which of the two frequencies is closer to the resonance frequency of the circuit, and justify your choice.
