Problem
A regional grid formerly transmitted 200MW of power at 33kV along a line whose conductors have a total resistance of 1.5Ω. After an upgrade, the same power is now sent at 330kV while the line resistance remains the same.
(i) For each of the two transmission voltages, calculate the power wasted as heat in the line.
(ii) The plant operates at full load for 6,000 hours in a calendar year. Determine the annual energy saved because of the voltage upgrade.
(iii) If the cost of generated electrical energy is Rs. 3.50 per kilowatt-hour, estimate the monetary saving per year resulting from the reduced line loss.
(iv) Briefly discuss one additional advantage, apart from the financial saving, that commonly accompanies the use of a higher transmission voltage.
