Problem

A 9.0 V rechargeable battery is connected in series with an ideal 12 V dc power supply and a 6.0 Ω resistor. The circuit is arranged so that current enters the positive terminal of the rechargeable battery, thereby charging it. After the switch is closed, a steady current of 0.50 A is established and maintained for 600 s. Assume all components remain at constant temperature and the internal resistance of both batteries is negligible. (a) Calculate the total electrical energy delivered by the 12 V supply during the 600 s interval. (b) Determine the thermal energy dissipated in the 6.0 Ω resistor during the same interval. (c) Compute the net change in the chemical energy stored in the rechargeable 9.0 V battery. (d) Justify quantitatively that the results of parts (a)–(c) demonstrate energy conservation for the charge flowing once around the loop, clearly stating the sign conventions used.
