Problem

A yo-yo consists of two identical solid cylindrical halves, each of mass 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} and radius 0.035 m0.035\,\text{m}, joined by a slender axle of negligible mass and radius 0.012 m0.012\,\text{m}. A light string is wound around the axle. When the yo-yo is released from rest, it descends while unwinding without slipping. (a) Derive an expression for the magnitude of the linear acceleration aa of the yo-yo’s center of mass in terms of gg, the total mass MM, the axle radius rr, and the rim radius RR. (b) Using your expression, calculate the numerical value of aa for the yo-yo described.
