Problem
(a) State the basic principle on which a cyclotron accelerates charged particles.
(b) Explain with suitable reasoning why the angular frequency of revolution of the particle inside an ideal cyclotron is independent of the radius of its circular path.
(c) A student argues that by simply increasing the applied alternating frequency, a cyclotron can accelerate protons to any kinetic energy. Explain clearly why, in practice, the increase in kinetic energy is limited when the protons become highly relativistic.
