Problem

Two ice-skaters start from the same point on a frictionless rink. Skater A has a mass of 50 kg50\,\text{kg} and moves due east with a speed of 2.0 m s−12.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, while Skater B has a mass of 50 kg50\,\text{kg} and moves due north with a speed of 3.0 m s−13.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Answer the following questions based on their motion: (i) Calculate the magnitude of the momentum of each skater. (ii) By treating the two momenta as vectors at right angles, determine the magnitude and direction (bearing from east) of the resultant momentum of the system consisting of both skaters. (iii) If immediately after moving off the skaters join hands and move together, find their common speed and the direction of their motion.
