Problem
A battery-operated toy motor suddenly stops after turning about half a revolution and merely vibrates. On inspection, it is found that the insulating gap between the two halves of the split-ring commutator has been bridged by a thin film of metal.
(a) Explain why the motor fails to complete continuous rotation when this bridging occurs.
(b) Suggest one practical step that would restore normal operation of the motor.
