Problem

(Vectors and Scalars) A vector that lies in the xx–yy plane is described by its magnitude AA and by the angle θ\theta it makes with the positive xx–axis. Answer the following questions in sequence. (a) Define a unit vector and explain its significance when representing a vector in component form. (b) Starting from the right–angled triangle formed by the components of the vector, derive expressions for AxA_x and AyA_y in terms of AA and θ\theta. (c) Using the results of part (b), prove that A=Ax2+Ay2A = \sqrt{A_x^2 + A_y^2} and that tan⁡θ=AyAx\tan\theta = \dfrac{A_y}{A_x}. (d) Briefly describe how the idea of components is extended when the vector has a non-zero zz-component. State the role of the unit vectors i^, j^, k^\hat i,\,\hat j,\,\hat k in such a case.
