Problem
A light, uniform rod of length L is hinged at one end H and held horizontally by two external forces.
• Force F1 acts at a point 3L from H and is directed upward at 45∘ to the rod.
• Force F2 acts downward at the free end of the rod and is perpendicular to the rod.
(i) Taking counter-clockwise rotation about H as positive, derive symbolic expressions for the torques produced by F1 and F2 about H.
(ii) Hence obtain the condition relating F1 and F2 for the rod to remain in rotational equilibrium.
(iii) If F2=40N, calculate the value of F1 required to satisfy the equilibrium condition derived in part (ii).
(iv) State, with reasons, the sense of rotation that would occur if F1 were made 10N smaller than the value found in part (iii).
