Problem

Two blocks are connected by a light, inextensible string that passes over an ideal (frictionless and light) pulley. Block P of mass 4.0 kg4.0\,\text{kg} rests on a horizontal tabletop. Block Q of mass 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg} hangs freely over the edge. The coefficients of friction between P and the table are μs=0.40\mu_s=0.40 and μk=0.30\mu_k=0.30. The system is released from rest. (i) Draw separate free-body diagrams for blocks P and Q, clearly labeling all forces acting on each block. (ii) Using suitable reasoning, determine whether motion will begin as soon as the system is released. Show all steps that lead to your conclusion. (iii) State which type of friction (static or kinetic) acts on block P immediately after release and justify your answer in one or two sentences.
