Problem

A lightweight, uniform rod 1.20 m1.20\,\text{m} long is pivoted at one end so it can rotate freely in a horizontal plane. A 15 N15\,\text{N} force is applied at a point 0.90 m0.90\,\text{m} from the pivot. The force makes a 45∘45^{\circ} angle above the rod, as measured from the rod toward a direction perpendicular to the rod. (a) Calculate the perpendicular distance between the pivot and the line of action of the applied force. (b) Determine the magnitude of the torque that the force produces about the pivot. (c) Suppose instead the same 15 N15\,\text{N} force is applied at the free end of the rod but directed exactly along the rod’s length. Determine the resulting torque magnitude in this case and explain your reasoning. (d) The pivot is now moved to the center of the rod while the force returns to the original location and direction described at the top of the problem. Without recalculating, state whether the torque magnitude increases, decreases, or remains the same compared with part (b), and justify your answer qualitatively.
