Problem

(a) Show that a charged particle of mass mm and charge qq moving at right angles to a uniform magnetic field BB describes a circular path and obtain an expression for the period TT of one complete revolution. (b) Hence explain why, within the non-relativistic limit, the frequency of revolution of the particle inside a cyclotron remains the same even though the radius of its orbit keeps increasing as the particle gains energy. (c) State one practical reason why an ordinary cyclotron is not suitable for accelerating electrons to very high energies.
