Problem

An office has the following equipment connected to the mains (30-day month): (a) (i) Five desktop computers each consume 200 W200\,\text{W} while in use for 8 h8\,\text{h} per working day and switch to a standby mode of 65 W65\,\text{W} for the remaining 16 h16\,\text{h} every day. (b) (ii) One network printer consumes 300 W300\,\text{W} while printing for a total of 30 min30\,\text{min} per day and remains in standby at 5 W5\,\text{W} for the rest of the day. (c) The electricity tariff is ₹7.00 per unit. (d) (a) Calculate the total monthly electrical energy wasted in standby by (1) the computers and (2) the printer. (e) (b) Compute the energy consumed monthly during active use by the computers and the printer separately. (f) (c) Determine the percentage of the office’s total monthly electrical energy that is lost in standby operation. (g) (d) Find the monthly cost attributed solely to the standby power losses.
