Problem

At 500 K the equilibrium constant for ammonia synthesis is Kp=0.15K_p=0.15 for the reaction N2(g)+3H2(g)↔2NH3(g)N_2(g)+3H_2(g)\leftrightarrow2NH_3(g). Initially, the system is at equilibrium with pN2=1.0 atmp_{N_2}=1.0\,\text{atm}, pH2=3.0 atmp_{H_2}=3.0\,\text{atm}, and pNH3=2.0 atmp_{NH_3}=2.0\,\text{atm}. The volume of the container is suddenly halved (temperature constant). Calculate the new reaction quotient QpQ_p immediately after compression and state whether the reaction will shift toward reactants or products to re-establish equilibrium.
