Problem

A closed thermodynamic system initially has internal energy U0U_0 and volume V0V_0. From t=0t = 0 to t=Tt = T the following occur simultaneously: • An electrical heater supplies energy to the system at a constant rate (power) PP. • The system pushes against a constant external pressure PextP_{\text{ext}}, and the volume increases uniformly with time so that at t=Tt = T the volume is V0+ΔVV_0 + \Delta V. Assume no other energy transfers occur. (a) Derive an algebraic expression for the mechanical work done on the system during the time interval 00 to TT in terms of PextP_{\text{ext}} and ΔV\Delta V. (b) In terms of U0U_0, PP, TT, PextP_{\text{ext}}, and ΔV\Delta V, obtain an expression for the internal energy UTU_T of the system at time TT. (c) Evaluate UTU_T for the case U0=1.2×103 JU_0 = 1.2\times10^{3}\,\text{J}, P=50 WP = 50\,\text{W}, T=30 sT = 30\,\text{s}, Pext=1.5×105 PaP_{\text{ext}} = 1.5\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}, and ΔV=1.2×10−3 m3\Delta V = 1.2\times10^{-3}\,\text{m}^3. Show all steps and report the final answer with appropriate units.
