Problem

A train enters a level straight stretch of track with a speed of 20 m s−120\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. It slows down uniformly at 0.5 m s−20.5\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} until its speed becomes 10 m s−110\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, after which it immediately accelerates uniformly at 0.8 m s−20.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} until its speed reaches 25 m s−125\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the time taken in each phase of motion. (ii) Find the total distance covered during the entire process.
