Problem

Let P(t)P(t) and Q(t)Q(t) be positive, differentiable functions of time tt. Consider their ratio R(t)=P(t)Q(t).R(t)=\dfrac{P(t)}{Q(t)}. Suppose that at a particular instant t=t0t=t_0 you know the numerical values of P(t0)P(t_0), Q(t0)Q(t_0), dPdt(t0)\dfrac{dP}{dt}(t_0), and dQdt(t0)\dfrac{dQ}{dt}(t_0). (a) Write dRdt\dfrac{dR}{dt} explicitly in terms of PP, QQ, dPdt\dfrac{dP}{dt}, and dQdt\dfrac{dQ}{dt}. No simplification is necessary. (b) Explain, without calculating any numerical value, how the signs of dPdt\dfrac{dP}{dt} and dQdt\dfrac{dQ}{dt} together determine whether RR is increasing or decreasing at t=t0t=t_0. Your explanation should reference the formula from part (a). (c) At t=t0t=t_0, suppose P=8P=8, Q=4Q=4, and dPdt=2\dfrac{dP}{dt}=2. Determine the inequality that dQdt\dfrac{dQ}{dt} must satisfy so that RR is decreasing at t=t0t=t_0, and justify your reasoning.
