Problem

A simple pendulum consists of a bob of mass 0.30 kg0.30\,\mathrm{kg} on a light rigid rod of length ℓp=0.40 m\ell_{\rm p}=0.40\,\mathrm{m}, free to swing in a fixed vertical plane about a smooth pivot. A steady horizontal wind, blowing in the plane of the swing, exerts a constant horizontal force F=1.5 NF=1.5\,\mathrm{N} on the bob, directed towards the side on which θ\theta is positive. Let θ\theta be the angle between the rod and the downward vertical. ((a)) State the dimension and shape of the configuration space of this pendulum. ((b)) Find the generalised force Qθ\mathcal{Q}_\theta due to the wind alone when θ=40∘\theta = 40^\circ, and state its units.
