Problem
A particle of charge Qe moves in a given electromagnetic field described by a scalar potential ϕ(r,t) and a vector potential A(r,t), with E=−∇ϕ−∂A/∂t and B=∇×A. Its motion follows from the generalised potential U=Qeϕ−Qev⋅A through Qk=dtd(∂q˙k∂U)−∂qk∂U, with qk=x,y,z and q˙k the corresponding velocity component.
((a)) Starting from this definition, derive the y-component Qy of the generalised force and show that it equals Qe(Ey+(v×B)y).
((b)) A proton (charge +e, mass mp) moves with E=0 in a uniform field B=Bz^, described in the gauge A1=(−By,0,0). Write the Lagrangian L1=T−U1 and its momentum py=∂L1/∂y˙. State, with a reason drawn from the form of L1, whether py is conserved in this gauge.
((c)) The gauge function Λ=Bxy gives a second vector potential A2=A1+∇Λ=(0,Bx,0) for the same field. Write L2=T−U2, find py in this gauge, and show it is conserved. Verify that L2−L1=edΛ/dt, and explain in one or two sentences why the equations of motion, and hence the proton's orbit, are the same in both gauges even though py is not.
