Problem

A particle of mass m=2.0 kgm=2.0\ \mathrm{kg} falls under uniform gravity g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} along a vertical line, with L=12mz˙2−mgzL=\tfrac12 m\dot z^2-mgz, zz measured upward from a fixed origin. Consider the transformation z→z+ϵz\to z+\epsilon, a shift by a small constant ϵ\epsilon that does not depend on tt. ((a)) Show that this shift changes LL by ϵ df/dt\epsilon\,\mathrm{d}f/\mathrm{d}t with f=−mgtf=-mgt, and use the general result Q=pzζ−fQ=p_z\zeta-f (with ζ=1\zeta=1 here) to write down the conserved quantity QQ in terms of mm, z˙\dot z, gg and tt. ((b)) The particle is thrown upward at t=0t=0 with z˙(0)=5.0 m s−1\dot z(0)=5.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. Evaluate QQ and identify, in words, what constant of the motion it represents.
