Problem
(a) A rugby ball tumbling in flight, air resistance ignored, is modelled as a symmetric rigid body with principal moments I1=I2=1.4×10−2kgm2 and I3=6.0×10−3kgm2 about its centre of mass, spinning about its long axis at ω3=15rads−1 with a small wobble. Calculate the body precession rate Ωb and, taking L≈I3ω3 for the small wobble, the space rate Ωs at which a spectator in the stand sees the long axis circle L. Which of the two would a camera fixed to the ball record? (b) A museum demonstration top has mass M=0.30kg, spin moment of inertia about its pivot I3=1.0×10−4kgm2, transverse moment about its pivot I1=4.0×10−4kgm2, and pivot-to-centre distance d=2.5cm. Spun at ω3=300rads−1 and released, spin only, at tilt θ=20∘, write down pψ and pϕ. (c) Using the gyroscope approximation, estimate the slow steady-precession rate at θ=20∘, taking g=9.8ms−2.
