Problem
A particle of mass μ=0.50 kg moves in a plane under the isotropic potential V(r)=21κr2 with κ=8.0Nm−1. Its energy is E=2.0 J and its angular momentum about the centre is ℓ=0.40kgm2s−1.
((a)) Write the Hamiltonian in plane polar coordinates (r,φ), write S=W(r,φ)−Et, and separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, identifying the constants E and ℓ and writing the radial equation for pr(r).
((b)) For this potential the radial loop integral is a standard result, Ir=2ωE−2ℓ with ω=κ/μ. Find the energy Ecirc of the circular orbit that has this same ℓ (the orbit with Ir=0), and compare it with the given E.
((c)) Write H in terms of Ir and Iφ=ℓ, and use νk=∂H/∂Ik to find the radial frequency νr and the angular frequency νφ.
((d)) Hence find the angle swept from one closest approach to the next, and state whether the orbit is closed.
