Problem

A long steel hydraulic cylinder has bore radius a=15 mma = 15\,\mathrm{mm} and outer radius b=45 mmb = 45\,\mathrm{mm}, and carries an internal pressure p=150 MPap = 150\,\mathrm{MPa} with zero pressure outside. Use Lamé's solution for a thick-walled cylinder to find the hoop stress σθθ\sigma_{\theta\theta} at the bore and at the outer surface.
