Problem

A copper busbar (E=130 GPaE = 130\,\mathrm{GPa}, linear expansion coefficient α=17×10−6 K−1\alpha = 17\times10^{-6}\,\mathrm{K^{-1}}) is rigidly clamped at both ends so that its length cannot change, then heated by ΔT=50 K\Delta T = 50\,\mathrm{K}. Find the stress that develops along its length, stating whether it is tensile or compressive.
