Problem

A solid glass rod of circular cross-section, diameter d=20 mmd = 20\,\mathrm{mm} and length L=0.80 mL = 0.80\,\mathrm{m}, is clamped horizontally at one end as a cantilever (E=70 GPaE = 70\,\mathrm{GPa}). A transverse force F=10 NF = 10\,\mathrm{N} is applied at the free tip, perpendicular to the rod's axis. Self-weight is ignored. ((a)) Find the tip deflection. ((b)) Find the cantilever's stiffness k=F/δk = F/\delta.
