Problem

An aluminium alloy shaft (G=27 GPaG = 27\,\mathrm{GPa}) of length 1.5 m1.5\,\mathrm{m} must carry a torque of 350 N m350\,\mathrm{N\,m} without the shear stress exceeding an allowable value of 70 MPa70\,\mathrm{MPa} anywhere in the cross-section. The shaft is solid and circular, and the torque is applied as equal and opposite torques at its two ends, with nothing else restraining it. ((a)) Find the minimum shaft radius that keeps the peak shear stress at the allowable value. ((b)) For that radius, find the angle of twist between the two ends of the shaft.
