Problem

Sea ice h=0.8 mh = 0.8\,\mathrm{m} thick floats on sea water of density 1025 kg m−31025\,\mathrm{kg\,m^{-3}}. The ice has E=5 GPaE = 5\,\mathrm{GPa} and ν=0.3\nu = 0.3. Take the restoring density contrast Δρ\Delta\rho equal to the water density and g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. A heavy load resting on the ice behaves as a line load. ((a)) Find the flexural rigidity DD of the ice sheet and its flexural parameter αf\alpha_f. ((b)) Find the distance from the load at which the ice surface first returns to its undisturbed level, and the distance at which the surrounding upward bulge peaks.
