Problem

During a minor earthquake a resident feels a sharp jolt followed 9.5 s9.5\,\mathrm{s} later by a stronger, more rolling motion. Model the crust between the resident and the source as a uniform Poisson solid with longitudinal wave speed cL=6.0 km s−1c_L = 6.0\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}} and shear speed cT=cL/3c_T = c_L/\sqrt3, and assume the two waves travel the same straight path from the hypocentre to the resident. Estimate that distance.
