Problem

A copper block is inspected with surface waves. Take its Poisson's ratio as ν=0.35\nu=0.35 and its shear speed as cT=2.30 km s−1c_T=2.30\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}. Two transducers sit 40.0 mm40.0\,\mathrm{mm} apart on a flat face; one launches a Rayleigh wave and the other records it. ((a)) Find cT2/cL2c_T^2/c_L^2 for this ν\nu. ((b)) Solve the Rayleigh secular equation for ξ=cR2/cT2\xi=c_R^2/c_T^2 to three figures, and find cRc_R. ((c)) Find the Rayleigh wave's travel time between the transducers, and how much later it arrives than a disturbance travelling at cTc_T would.
