Problem

Nickel has shear modulus G=76 GPaG = 76\,\mathrm{GPa} and lattice parameter a=0.352 nma = 0.352\,\mathrm{nm} (face-centred cubic), so its Burgers vector is b=a/2b = a/\sqrt2. ((a)) A resolved shear stress τ=15 MPa\tau = 15\,\mathrm{MPa} acts on a straight screw dislocation. Find the Peach-Koehler force per unit length pushing it to glide. ((b)) Two parallel screw dislocations of the same sign, a distance d=200 nmd = 200\,\mathrm{nm} apart, repel one another. Find the force per unit length between them and compare it with the force found in part (a).
