Bending, Ringing, Breaking and Flowing, Ch Fracture: stress concentration, cracks and toughness

Problem

Take the alumina ceramic of Table 8.1: KIc=4 MPa m1/2K_{Ic}=4\,\mathrm{MPa\,m^{1/2}}, E=380 GPaE=380\,\mathrm{GPa}, ν=0.22\nu=0.22. ((a)) Convert its toughness to a fracture energy Gc\mathcal{G}_c with Irwin's relation. ((b)) Find the critical half-length of a central crack in a wide alumina plate working at σ=200 MPa\sigma=200\,\mathrm{MPa}. ((c)) Find the fracture energy someone would get by wrongly using the plane-stress E′=EE'=E in part (a).
