Problem

A steel strip (E=200 GPaE=200\,\mathrm{GPa}) of width B=10 mmB=10\,\mathrm{mm} and thickness h=1.0 mmh=1.0\,\mathrm{mm} is glued to a rigid block and is being peeled off by a force FF at its free end, perpendicular to the block. A length aa has already come away, and the glue needs Gc=100 J m−2\mathcal{G}_c=100\,\mathrm{J\,m^{-2}} to separate further. Treat the free length as a cantilever built in where the glue still holds. ((a)) Find the compliance C=δ/FC=\delta/F of the end, where δ\delta is the end's lift. ((b)) Find G\mathcal{G} at fixed load and at fixed lift, and say under which the peel is stable. ((c)) For a=50 mma=50\,\mathrm{mm}, find the force at which peeling starts and the lift at that moment.
